The Rhythms of Memory

This series is inspired by my journey with my mother as she struggled with dementia, the most feared disease that is also incurable. I begin my paintings using multiple layers, which is symbolic of the abundance of plaques and tangles that make communication and judgement difficult.

Each of the paintings represents one aspect I observed in mom’s struggle. The first series conveys the feeling of isolation and invisibility, a common feeling for dementia patients. Figures are painted over so they appear ghostly, but they are still present.

The second shows the feeling of being lost and confused. I make seemingly random marks creating a chaotic composition and then connect the marks to bring order to the composition.
